Witnessing the divine form of Bhagwan Jagannath at the temple, Adi Shankaracharya was struck by such profound inspiration that he composed Shree Jagannathashtakam (ŚrīJagannāthāṣṭakaṁ/ श्रीजगन्नाथाष्टकं). These eight verses, imbued with devotion, capture the essence of Bhagwan – his radiant Form, His divine Virtues, and His playful Pastimes. The description of the Ratha Yatra within the stotra is so exquisite that it enraptures all who recite or hear it. As the most popular stotra of Bhagwan Jagannath, the Shree Jagannathashtakam resonated with Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who sang it during his pilgrimage. Reciting this potent Ashtakam with heartfelt devotion pleases Bhagwan Jagannath, purifies one's heart and attracts His grace. It fosters a spring of selfless and unwavering devotion within the devotee, making it a treasured offering – a gift that resonates deeply with Bhagwan Jagannath Himself.

कदाचित् कालिन्दी-तट-विपिन-सङ्गीत-तरलो,

मुदा गोपी-नारी-वदन-कमलास्वाद-मधुपः।

रमा-शम्भु-ब्रह्मामर-पतिगणेशार्चित-पदो,

जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे॥ १॥

हे प्रभु! जब आप परम आनंद में होते हैं, तब कालिंदी तट के ललित कुंजों में मधुर वेणु-नाद द्वारा सबके मन को अपनी ओर आकर्षित करते हैं। सभी ग्वाल-बाल और गोपिकाएँ आपकी ओर ऐसे मोहित हो जाते हैं, जैसे कमल के फूल के मकरंद पर भँवरा आकर्षित होता है। आपके चरण-कमलों की सेवा देवी लक्ष्मी, ब्रह्मा, शिव, गणेश और देवराज इंद्र करते हैं। हे जगन्नाथ स्वामी! आप मेरे पथ-प्रदर्शक बनें और मुझे शुभ दृष्टि प्रदान करें।

Kadācit kālindī-taṭa-vipina-saṅgīta-taralo,

Mudābhīrī-nārī-vadana-kamalāsvāda-madhupaḥ।

Ramā-Śambhu-Brahmāmara-pati-Gaṇeśārcita-pado,

At the times when playful delight ripples through Your heart, Your flute weaves magic on the banks of the sacred Yamuna Like a swarm of intoxicated bees drawn to the lotus's fragrant nectar, the Gopis abandon themselves to Your enchanting tune Your lotus feet are worshipped by Lakshmi, Shambhu, Brahma, Indra, and Ganesh, all seeking Your grace May Jagannath Swami, my guiding light, illuminate the path before my eyes

भुजे सव्ये वेणुं, शिरसि शिखि-पिच्छं, कटि-तटे

दुकूलं, नेत्रान्ते सहचर-कटाक्षं विदधते।

सदा श्रीमद्-वृन्दावन-वसति-लीला-परिचयो,

जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे॥ २॥

श्री जगन्नाथ अपने बाएँ हाथ में बाँसुरी और शिर पर मोरपंख धारण किए हुए सजे-धजे खड़े हैं। कमर में पीताम्बर बँधा हुआ है। उनके नेत्रों के कटाक्ष प्रेमी भक्तों के मन को निहारकर आनंद प्रदान कर रहे हैं। वे वृंदावन में स्वयं द्वारा की गई दिव्य लीलाओं का स्मरण करा रहे हैं और स्वयं भी उन लीलाओं के आनंद में निमग्न हैं। हे जगन्नाथ स्वामी! आप मेरे पथ-प्रदर्शक बनें और मुझे शुभ दृष्टि प्रदान करें।

Bhuje savye veṇuṁ, śirasi śikhi-picchaṁ, kaṭi-taṭe dukūlam।

Netrānte sahacara-kaṭākṣaṁ ca vidadhat।

Sadā śrīmad-vṛndāvana-vasati-līlā-paricayo,

महाम्भोधेस्तीरे कनक-रुचिरे नील-शिखरे,

वसन् प्रासादान्तः सह बलभद्रेण बलिना।

सुभद्रा-मध्यस्थः सकल-सुर-सेवावसर-दो,

जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे॥ ३॥

विशाल सागर के किनारे, सुंदर नीलाचल पर्वत के शिखरों से घिरे अति रमणीय स्वर्णिम आभा वाले पुरुषोत्तम क्षेत्र श्री पुरी धाम में आप अपने बलशाली भ्राता बलभद्रजी और मध्य में बहन सुभद्राजी के साथ विराजमान होकर सभी देवताओं को अपनी सेवा का अवसर प्रदान करते हैं। हे जगन्नाथ स्वामी! आप मेरे पथ-प्रदर्शक बनें और मुझे शुभ दृष्टि प्रदान करें।

कृपा-पारावारः सजल-जलद-श्रेणी-रुचिरः,

रमा-वाणी-रामः स्फुरद्-अमल-पङ्केरुह-मुखः।

सुरेन्द्रैराराध्यः श्रुति-गण-शिखा-गीत-चरितः,

जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे॥ ४॥

जगन्नाथ स्वामी दया और कृपा के अथाह सागर हैं। सजल जलद-श्रेणी के समान सुंदर आपका रूप है। लक्ष्मी एवं सरस्वती को आनंद प्रदान करने वाला आपका मुखचंद्र पूर्ण खिले हुए उस कमल-पुष्प के समान है, जिसमें कोई दाग नहीं है। श्रुतियों ने देवताओं के आराध्य आपके दिव्य गुणों का बखान किया है। हे जगन्नाथ स्वामी! आप मेरे पथ-प्रदर्शक बनें और मुझे शुभ दृष्टि प्रदान करें।

Kṛpā-pārāvāraḥ sajala-jalada-śreṇi-ruciro,

Ramā-Vāṇī-Rāmaḥ sphurad-amala-paṅkeruha-mukhaḥ।

Surendrair ārādhyaḥ śruti-gaṇa-śikhā-gīta-carito,

Jagannāthaḥ Svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me ॥4॥

Your compassion is boundless, like an endless ocean overflowing with grace for Your devotees. Your beauty is equally immeasurable, resembling dark, rain-laden clouds that promise life-giving showers. You bring joy to both Ramā (Lakṣmī) and Vāṇī (Sarasvatī), for Your captivating face shines like a flawlessly pure lotus in full bloom. Even the Suras (Devas) worship You, while the sacred scriptures sing the glories of Your transcendental pastimes. O Jagannath Swami, be the guiding light upon my path, and forever illuminate the way before my eyes.

रथारूढो गच्छन् पथि मिलित-भूदेव-पटलैः,

स्तुति-प्रादुर्भावं प्रति पदम् उपाकर्ण्य सदयः।

दयासिन्धुर्बन्धुः सकल-जगतां सिन्धु-सुतया,

जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे॥ ५॥

जैसे ही आप अपने रथ पर आरूढ़ होकर प्रकट होते हैं, सड़कों पर भक्तों का एक आनंदित महासागर उमड़ पड़ता है। ब्राह्मण स्तुतियाँ गाकर आपकी महिमा का गुणगान करते हैं, और उनकी स्तुतियाँ भक्तों के बीच गूँज उठती हैं। इस भव्य रथयात्रा के हर कदम के साथ आपका करुणामय हृदय अपने भक्तों की पुकार के साथ धड़कता है। आप करुणा के असीम सागर हैं, समस्त जगत के सच्चे बंधु हैं, और सभी प्राणी आपकी संतान के समान हैं। हे जगन्नाथ स्वामी! आप मेरे पथ-प्रदर्शक बनें और मुझे शुभ दृष्टि प्रदान करें।

Rathārūḍho gacchan pathi milita-bhūdeva-paṭalaiḥ,

Stuti-prādurbhāvaṁ prati-padam upākarṇya sadayaḥ।

Dayā-sindhur bandhuḥ sakala-jagatāṁ Sindhu-sutayā,

Jagannāthaḥ Svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me ॥5॥

As You emerge, mounted upon Your divine chariot, the streets overflow with a joyous ocean of devotees. Brāhmaṇas raise their voices in heartfelt praise, their sacred stutis resounding through the gathering. With every step of this magnificent procession, Your compassionate heart beats in harmony with the love and devotion of Your devotees. You are an endless ocean of mercy, the eternal friend of the entire world, and all living beings are cherished as Your own children, embraced by Your boundless love. O Jagannath Swami, be my guiding light and forever illuminate the path before my eyes.

परं ब्रह्मापीडः कुवलय-दलोत्फुल्ल-नयनः,

निवासी नीलाद्रौ निहित-चरणोऽनन्त-शिरसि।

रसानन्दी राधा-सरस-वपुरालिङ्गन-सुखः,

जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे॥ ६॥

परब्रह्म ने स्वयं को साकार कर यह आपका दिव्य रूप धारण किया है, जिसकी आँखें पूर्ण खिले हुए कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान हैं। इस संसार में आप नीलाचल पर्वत पर निवास करते हैं, परंतु पारलौकिक जगत में आपके चरण-कमल अनंत देव (शेषनाग) के मस्तक की शोभा बढ़ाते हैं। दिव्य प्रेम की मूर्ति श्रीराधारानी भी रस से परिपूर्ण आपके आलिंगन में अप्रतिम दिव्य आनंद का अनुभव करती हैं। हे जगन्नाथ स्वामी! आप मेरे पथ-प्रदर्शक बनें और मुझे शुभ दृष्टि प्रदान करें।

Paraṁ Brahmāpīḍaḥ kuvalaya-dalotphulla-nayano,

Nivāsī Nīlādrau nihita-caraṇo'nanta-śirasi।

Rasānandī Rādhā-sarasa-vapur-āliṅgana-sukho,

Jagannāthaḥ Svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me ॥6॥

The Supreme Brahman has manifested in this divine form of Yours, whose eyes resemble the petals of a fully blossomed lotus. In this world, You reside upon the sacred Nīlāchala Hill, while in the transcendental realm, Your lotus feet rest gloriously upon the hoods of Anantadeva (Śeṣanāga). Even Śrī Rādhārāṇī, the very embodiment of divine love, experiences an indescribable transcendental rasa while embraced by Your blissful form. O Jagannath Swami, be my guiding light and forever illuminate the path before my eyes.

न वै याचे राज्यं, न च कनक-माणिक्य-विभवं,

न याचेऽहं रम्यां सकल-जन-काम्यां वर-वधूम्।

सदा काले काले प्रमथ-पतिना गीत-चरितो,

जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे॥ ७॥

मैं न तो राज्य की कामना करता हूँ, न ही स्वर्ण, आभूषण, कनक, माणिक्य एवं वैभव की इच्छा रखता हूँ। न ही मुझे किसी सुंदर पत्नी की अभिलाषा है। मेरी एकमात्र अभिलाषा यही है कि जिनके दिव्य गुणों का भगवान शिव (प्रमथपति) सदा कीर्तन एवं श्रवण करते हैं, वे श्री जगन्नाथ स्वामी मेरे हृदय को भक्ति-भाव से परिपूर्ण कर दें। हे जगन्नाथ स्वामी! आप मेरे पथ-प्रदर्शक बनें और मुझे शुभ दृष्टि प्रदान करें।

Na vai yāce rājyaṁ, na ca kanaka-māṇikya-vibhavam।

Na yāce'haṁ ramyāṁ sakala-jana-kāmyāṁ vara-vadhūm।

Sadā kāle kāle Pramatha-patinā gīta-carito,

Jagannāthaḥ Svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me ॥7॥

Worldly desires hold no sway over me. I seek neither the glory of a kingdom, nor the splendor of gold, jewels, and worldly riches, nor even the beauty of a cherished bride. My only longing, at every moment of every day, is for Śrī Jagannath. His divine glories, eternally sung by Lord Śiva Himself, fill my heart with unwavering devotion. O Jagannath Swami, be my guiding light and forever illuminate the path before my eyes.

हर त्वं संसारं द्रुततरम् असारं सुरपते,

हर त्वं पापानां विततिम् अपारं यादवपते।

अहो दीनेऽनाथे निहित-चरणो निश्चितमिदं,

जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन-पथ-गामी भवतु मे॥ ८॥

हे देवों के स्वामी! संसार में मेरी जो आसक्ति है, उसे शीघ्र हर लीजिए। हे यदुपति! आसक्ति से उत्पन्न मेरे समस्त पाप-कर्मों का नाश कर दीजिए। आप दीन-दुखियों के एकमात्र सहारा हैं। जिसने अपने आपको आपके चरण-कमलों में समर्पित कर दिया है, जो इस संसार में भटककर गिर पड़ा है, और जिसे इस भवसागर में कहीं कोई आश्रय नहीं मिला—उसे केवल आप ही अपना सकते हैं। हे जगन्नाथ स्वामी! आप मेरे पथ-प्रदर्शक बनें और मुझे शुभ दृष्टि प्रदान करें।

Hara tvaṁ saṁsāraṁ drutataram asāraṁ, Sura-pate।

Hara tvaṁ pāpānāṁ vitatim aparāṁ, Yādava-pate।

Aho dīne'nāthe nihita-caraṇo niścitam idaṁ,

Jagannāthaḥ Svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me ॥8॥

O Master of the Devas, by Your divine grace, swiftly free me from the vast ocean of worldly attachment. O King of the Yādavas, You alone have the power to cleanse even the gravest of my sins. May I, a humble and helpless soul seeking refuge, forever find shelter at Your lotus feet. O Jagannath Swami, be my guiding light and forever illuminate the path before my eyes.

जगन्नाथाष्टकं पुण्यं यः पठेत् प्रयतः शुचिः।

सर्वपाप-विनिर्मुक्तात्मा विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति॥

जो भी श्रद्धा, भक्ति और पूर्ण समर्पण के साथ पवित्र श्री जगन्नाथ अष्टकम् का पाठ करता है अथवा श्रद्धापूर्वक उसका श्रवण करता है, उस पर श्री श्री श्री जगन्नाथ महाप्रभु की असीम कृपा बरसती है। इस दिव्य स्तोत्र के प्रभाव से हृदय शुद्ध होता है, पापों का क्षय होता है, भक्ति का उदय होता है और साधक धीरे-धीरे भगवान के दिव्य धाम की ओर अग्रसर होता है।

जब भी मन चिंता, अशांति, भय, व्याकुलता, दुःख या मानसिक विचलन से घिर जाए, तब श्रद्धापूर्वक श्री जगन्नाथ अष्टकम् का पाठ करें या उसका श्रवण करें। प्रभु श्री जगन्नाथ के दिव्य नाम, गुण और महिमा मन को शांति, हृदय को संतोष तथा आत्मा को आध्यात्मिक बल प्रदान करते हैं।

सनातन श्री जगन्नाथ परंपरा में प्रातःकाल, विशेषकर ब्रह्ममुहूर्त (प्रातः लगभग ४:०० से ६:०० बजे तक) तथा सायंकाल का समय जप, पाठ, स्मरण और भक्ति के लिए अत्यंत शुभ एवं फलदायी माना गया है। इन पावन क्षणों में किया गया भगवान श्री श्री श्री जगन्नाथ महाप्रभु का स्मरण साधक के जीवन में दिव्य शांति, सद्बुद्धि, आध्यात्मिक उन्नति और प्रभु-कृपा का संचार करता है।

Jagannāthāṣṭakaṁ puṇyaṁ yaḥ paṭhet prayataḥ śuciḥ।

Sarva-pāpa-viśuddhātmā Viṣṇu-lokaṁ sa gacchati ॥

With a heart filled with faith and devotion, whoever sincerely recites or listens to the sacred Śrī Jagannātha Aṣṭakam receives the boundless grace of Lord Jagannath. Its divine vibrations purify the heart, wash away the burden of sinful reactions, awaken loving devotion, and gradually lead the soul toward the eternal abode of Bhagavān.

Whenever your mind feels anxious, disturbed, restless, or overwhelmed, lovingly remember Lord Jagannath by reciting or listening to this sacred hymn. His divine names and glories bring peace to the heart, strength to the mind, and hope to the soul.

According to the timeless Sanātana Jagannath tradition, the most auspicious times for this devotional practice are the serene hours of Brahma Muhūrta (approximately 4:00–6:00 AM) and the peaceful hours of the evening. During these sacred moments, the mind naturally becomes calm, making it easier to absorb oneself in the loving remembrance of Śrī Śrī Jagannath Mahāprabhu.
